David A. Jaffe demonstrates Radiodrum performance of Trimpin piano and percussion

David A. Jaffe demonstrates the use of the Radiodrum, a 3D percussion sensor, to control the Trimpin piano-playing mechanism, as well as percussion instruments he inherited from Henry Brant, modified by Trimpin to be robotic. Recorded in Trimpin’s studio. Includes excerpts from Jaffe’s “The Space Between Us,” for Radiodrum-performed piano, percussion and eight spatially separated string players. Uses Radiodrum instrument invented by Robert Boie of Bell Labs and pioneered by percussionist/composer Andrew Schloss, who performed the Radiodrum part at the premiere performance at the 2011 Other Minds Festival in San Francisco.
