REUBEN JELLEYMAN: Vespro

The NZSO National Youth Orchestra has a proud recent history of commissions of young New Zealand composers. In 2017 it presented not one, but two new commissions, by Reuben Jelleyman and Celeste Oram. In our final two Resound new releases to celebrate NZ Music Month we bring you full length film of these works, beginning with Reuben’s ‘Vespro’.

Reuben likens the creation of ‘Vespro’, a work that emerged from the memory of listening to Monteverdi’s ‘Vespro della Beata Vergine’ (1610), to the “restoration of an old building, where old stone buttresses mesh with glass and steel. You can excavate shards of the Vespers in the very fabric of the work; but you can also very clearly see it amidst the central structures. And so in being, the work is an entirely new imagination; an evening prayer; a dream.”

The NZSO National Youth Orchestra is conducted in this performance from the Michael Fowler Centre by Sir James MacMillan.

Audio was recorded by our Resound partner RNZ Concert. Resound is funded by NZ On Air.
